Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors Are Legally Required in Ontario Homes As Of Today

 In Home Care Tips

Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are legally required in Ontario homes as of today, Wednesday, October 15th.

Although Bill 77 updates the Ontario Fire Code to enforce the use of CO detectors only in dwellings that have a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage, these devices are a good idea in any home.

Ontario will hold its first Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, starting November 1st and there there will be an emphasis on public education for the next few months. The Ontario Building Code has required detectors in new construction since 2011, but this bill applies to all homes in the province.

Failure to install a carbon monoxide detector carries a fine of $235.
