Event Description

SlutWalk is a movement that protests rape culture, victim blaming and slut shaming. It started in 2011 when a Toronto police representative made a statement on the York University campus that if women wanted to avoid being raped or sexually assaulted, they should “stop dressing like sluts.” This comment suggested that a person, specifically women in this case, had the power to choose whether to get raped or sexually assaulted by altering their wardrobe.

When people are blamed for their assaults based on their appearance, consuming alcohol or are told that they should have taken measures to avoid getting raped or assaulted, it promotes a culture where we automatically believe the rapist/perpetrator and distrust and shame the victim. THIS is rape culture, and is a pervasive issue, especially on university and college campuses with the statistic that 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted on a college or university campus in their lifetime.

On Saturday April 7th in Market Square downtown, we will be marching in protest of rape culture and the harms it brings. This event is open to EVERYONE regardless of gender identity, race, religion, culture, background and all other facets of identity. Come march with us and take a stand against rape culture, victim blaming, and slut shaming!
