Shubenacadie Sam preps for Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day isn’t too far away, and the first groundhog to make a prediction on spring’s ETA is right here in Canada.
Shubenacadie Sam makes his home in Nova Scotia, in the Atlantic time zone, and will be up an hour earlier than groundhogs in the eastern time zone.
February 2 is when Sam will be watched closely to see if he glimpses his shadow — thus dashing hopes for an early spring.
Even before that, however, the world-renowned woodchuck has been staying in touch with Canadians anxious to hear his verdict.
“He’s twittering and he’s on Sam Cam, and he’s doing his thing, getting prepared for Groundhog Day, and he has a Youtube video now,” says Susan Penney, staff member at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park.
His webcam has actually made it into the top ten at Earthcam.com, although if Sam is moved by his online fame, he hasn’t let it change him.
“He still is sleeping a lot, and I’ll tell you, the main things that groundhogs do when they’re not hibernating is sleep, eat and dig holes,” Penney says.
